About Me I grew up in Madison, WI. I earned my BA in Classics (Latin and Greek) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, followed by an MA and PhD in Biblical Hebrew and Semitic Studies, with a minor in Arabic. I've published a number of academic articles, listed after this biography. After 9/11, I served for four years at the Top Secret National Security Agency as an Arabic linguist, during which time I earned the Global War on Terrorism Civilian Service Medal for service performed in Iraq in 2004. In 2006 I left the NSA to become a teacher of Latin at a public high school. I speak Spanish, Romanian, and Arabic. I'm the author of Intermediate Arabic for Dummies, by Wiley Publishing. I'm proud to be a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and I'm a certified interpreter for that organization. Please Explore My Books In addition to my interest in languages, I've written several novels published by Lingua Sacra Publishing. My first novel, A Place of Brightness, tells the story of a family starting from the time they were fighting against Communist tyranny in 1960's Romania down to the current day. The novel Amor Vincit Omnia: An Andrew Valquist Adventure , recounts the early days of a new linguist at the National Security Agency. In this novel, I indulge my love of Latin and spin a tale in which a knowledge of that ancient language is crucial to stopping a shadowy terrorist organization. Another novel students of Latin will love is In Saecula Saeculorum, in which a group of four high school students are sent back in time to Ancient Rome on a mission to save the world.
