Hands-On HTML5 Web Application Development Course! 5 Real-World HTML5 Web Applications Improve Your HTML5 Knowledge

HTML5 is the latest version of HTML, with new elements, attributes, and a larger set of technologies which makes development of powerful and diverse websites and web applications lot more easier and effective.

Many times, just knowing the syntax of a programming language might not help you while working on projects. Instead, you should be able to apply your programming language skills in real-world projects. In this course, Advanced HTML5 in Action: Build 5 Advanced HTML5 Web Apps, you will learn more of intermediate and advanced HTML5 functionalities by developing unique demos and 5 advanced HTML5 web applications. This is a hands-on practical course that focuses more on practice and less on theoretical explanations.

The two major sections in this course are

1. HTML5 Elements and Attributes in Action
2. Let's Develop: Advanced HTML5 Web Applications

In the first section, you will be introduced to some of the HTML5 elements and attributes in a very effective way.

In the second section, you will develop 5 advanced HTML5 web applications from scratch. These projects include

1. Accordion
2. Text Editor
3. Audio Player
4. Video Speed Controller
5. Catch Me if You Can (Online Game)

The first project “Accordion” is developed using some new HTML5 elements. The second project “Text Editor” is developed with the help of a new attribute and also using HTML5’s storage options. The third project “Audio Player” and fourth project “Video Speed Controller” makes use of the multimedia functionalities offered by HTML5. The last project which is a game named “Catch Me if You Can” is developed using HTML5’s 2D graphics options.

This course is not a basic HTML5 course that teaches you different HTML tags from scratch. It deals with more intermediate and advanced HTML5. As all the projects are developed using jQuery, you will be able to not only learn advanced HTML5 concepts, but also improve your jQuery knowledge. You will be able to make use of the untapped potential of HTML5  and also become confident in building HTML5 Web Applications on your own as you develop these projects from scratch .

I joined Udemy in 2017 and have taken over 800 hours of training often the same subject by different instructors. I rate a course by instructors delivery, cadence and how well I understand what I've learned. Media delivery and storage is very important to me when it comes to music and the training on the media player I'm using to broadcast my 14 radio stations. Using the base code someone else wrote and then modifying it to fit my need is a compliment to the code writer.

Good match but expected something I didn't already know for HTML. Think course was misnamed as it should indicate that it is using jQuery and maybe also Canvas. This was a good review for me, however.

Summary:
A good survey of the new features in HTML5 for students either familiar with or willing to gloss over the details of jquery. A lot of detail. The instructor knows her way around a stylesheet.

Presentation:
The speaker's English is adequate for the task, however the lecture is delivered in a monotone which is a little tiring for me. The material is a little thin with very little conceptual background, but that's consistent with the course description.

Keep in mind in the following comments, I'm running Linux Mint with chrome and Firefox as my browsers.

Nit-picks:
- With spans, divs, and all the new names for divs in HTML5, I prefer to avoid p tags.
- In the online editor lesson, the instructor uses the button text to indicate state. Not a good tactic if you're concerned about maintenance.
- The instructor added a font-size style to the summary css rule (in the accordion lesson) which masks a visual issue of the icons cascading forward. At least on linux FF and chrome.
- In the audio player, ONLY "Fur Elise" and "Maidens Prayer" will get the ended event and continue to the next song when the page is run on chrome.
- The sample videos in the video player lesson were not made available.

Technical Issues:
I have some concerns that cross-platform compatibility is being glossed over. You may be able to get away with this if you're targetting an intranet with only 1 allowed type of browser, but usually you'll need to target a larger audience.
- 2 of the lessons used the colorpicker and date widgets respectively. They seemed to work well on chrome mac, and maybe they work well on FF mac and windows browsers as well, but I know they're crap on the linux browsers. I'm not sure the use of these widgets should be encouraged.
- The details tag is not available on IE, making it a defacto NON-standard and a bad choice to include in the course.
- The CSS rule for hiding the arrow on the summary tag works only on chrome.
