This course is a detailed primer in music basics. Taught by Bill Neely, who developed the Udemy course, Adventures in Classical Music, a comprehensive history of classical music.

Beginning with a short history of Rock and Roll, this course first identifies the component elements of music—rhythm, melody, harmony, texture, tempo, dynamics, and form. Then, it goes on to show how those elements come together to create music—any music whether a pop song or a classical symphony.

  • Section 1 includes a short history of Rock and Roll and relates these component elements to the styles that make up rock and roll and its predecessors.

  • In 25 lectures, you will learn the component parts of music—rhythm, pitch, melody, harmony, form, etc.

So far this course has not been a good match for me. I listen to all types of music daily ranging from light classical to country. I find myself wondering how the arranger decided which instruments he used to play each part and how they all come together in beautiful music. For example: I recently heard an orchestra recording of "Rainy night in Georgia". So beautiful, you could even hear the water dropping off of eaves in the background. Maybe the next section 26.4.2 will help me.

While this course has lots of great content, the somnambulistic presentation could take down an elephant on meth. I wanted a course to review several areas of theory, as I recently started singing again. There is absolutely no emphasis on LISTENING here, or teaching listening skills - exp. "Here's a key (played). What key do you think this is? How can we tell?" In fact, there are no materials to test oneself at all. That takes the "active" out of Interactive!

While I happen to love Classical music and The Beatles, I can see many being put to sleep within minutes by never hearing music created in their lifetime... Finally, the delivery reminds me of pantomime. Teaching requires the teacher to be excited! If the instructor sounds half asleep, why should we care or pay attention? I've put a fork in this one half-way through - while struggling to watch it for months. There are FAR better courses on music basics, that you may stay awake through.

Music education should NEVER be boring or a chore, as music is always fascinating. It takes work to make it this boring.

If you always wanted to know the structure of beautiful western music, but didn't know where to start: I would suggest that this course is ideal for you! No previous knowledge is required at all.

Mr. Neely will give you the 2,000 feet overview of music, and then dissect piece by piece the different elements at a level anyone can understand.

My enjoyment of music, of all kinds, has increased a couple of orders of magnitude with a minimal amount of effort and a great deal of fun!

Keep up the awesome work Bill! Can't wait for the next course!
