About This Course

A sure guide for the Latin student emerging from elementary Latin grammar and heading toward real classical authors.

Students emerging from a year or two of elementary Latin grammar often feel overwhelmed by the real Latin authors that mark the transition to intermediate Latin. A popular, and excellent, 19th century reader, Fabulae Faciles was designed and perfected over many years to bridge this gap. I have used these stories for years for my own college-level Latin students as independent study materials over the summer which typically separates elementary and intermediate Latin.

In this class, I cover the first reader in the Fabulae Faciles, by providing audio files, guided study, supplementary materials, and, more important, a constant and consistent presence as you work you way through the passages.

  • Be prepared to more on to the more challenging Hercules stories of the Fabulae Faciles reader

  • Understand and have practiced the basic classroom techniques of the intermediate level of Latin and beyond

  • Have established a healthy study routine that will enable you to master more challenging authors on your own later in your Latin career

Dr. Lugosch is an extraordinary online Latin instructor. His meticulously prepared classes are conducted with enthusiasm and diligence, teaching Latin in its ancient purity.

He elevates the understanding of Latin grammar and syntax with innovative, effective methods. I encourage anyone who wants to advance their understanding of the lingua Latinae to enroll every course offered by Dr. Lugosch.

This is an amazing course. I self studied Latin grammar for a year before coming across this course. I am a PhD student in physics and I want to learn Latin reading for exploiting old scientific and mathematical and o philosophical literature like Newton’s Principia Mathematica. I thought I wasn’t ready for this course as far as vocabulary was concerned . But I realised that I already could understand most of this if i spent little longer and thought about English derivatives. I had a tough time remembering prepositions and conjunctions but the repeated reinforcement here with context made me eventually imbibe them into my brain. The approach of the teacher is unique and encouraging. Hoping to read all the fables in the series and eventually get started to read original Latin texts that I want to read eventually. If you need reading pratice in Latin; go for this course. It is as though the instructor is personally sitting with you and encouraging you. P.S. Is there an active reading group even now for this course as mentioned in the videos ?

I'm looking forward to reading Livy, Tacitus, Cicero, Caesar, etc...--in Latin. This was a good start to hopefully reaching my objective. I would particularly recommend writing the text as the professor reads it to you; this helped me get used to translating the sentences in my mind, not on paper. In fact, I didn't write one translation! Now to Hercules.

Excellent course. Thoroughly enjoyed working through the Perseus stories. The course improved my Latin reading and pronunciation. Taking the time and working through all the steps with each story, including doing the dictation, really helped. Highly recommended. I'm looking forward to the other courses in this series of stories.

This is how Latin should be taught - in a relaxed yet disciplined manner. I rate this teacher very, very highly. I have amost completed another of his courses: Wheelock's Latin. That, too, is an excellent course.

A very good taster of Latin reading. The Ritchie text is enjoyable and accessible ( with liberal use of the running vocabulary and notes) to someone with perhaps a year's Latin. The instructor's method is effective and (I would imagine) applicable to more difficult texts. Are there any plans for a follow up course covering other section of Sanford and Scott?

This is a very different experience to the professor's earlier Wheelock's lectures. It is less structured in the sense that the workload is now on your shoulders. The course is much shorter in a sense (only really 11 paragraphs of material, as well as the mythology background) but it's vitally important as it shows us how to engage with the language after our original studies. I'm beginning to get a sense of not just "translating" but actually "reading Latin", and there's a big difference. Very helpful.
